SANFORD, Maine – Christmas time is a great time to think about giving back to your community. Volunteering in the upcoming tax season can be a great way to learn new skills and get involved. Since 2002, York County CA $ H — Creating Assets, Savings & Hope — at York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC) has helped more than 5,000 eligible York County residents earn nearly $ 12 million in federal and state tax refunds IRS sponsored VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Aid) websites across York County. York County CA $ H is one of nine members of CA $ H Maine, a statewide coalition that provides hardworking Mainern opportunities to build wealth and thrive.
“The earned income tax credit is widely recognized as the largest poverty reduction program in the United States, with census data showing the 2012 credit lifted millions of people above the poverty line,” said Meaghan Arzberger, director of economic opportunity at YCCAC. “We couldn’t help working families in York County collect this money without volunteer support during tax season.”
Volunteers can help prepare taxes in person – or virtually, at a time that is convenient for them, after the submitter uploads or submits their materials. The volunteers receive training in tax law and do not need any tax experience to participate. “We provide all of the training and tools a volunteer needs to successfully help families raise funds in York County. Volunteers just have to want to help, ”says Arzberger.
Tax training for volunteers is held virtually and can be carried out with others, as a group or on your own. Volunteers who complete their tax advisor training earn IRS certification. Interested parties can contact Theresa Leblanc at (207) 305-4488 or email Theresa.Leblanc@yccac.org.
