CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Many Republican lawmakers and Governor Justice are pushing for a gradual abolition of income tax when the annual legislature opens on Wednesday.
Eight other states, Florida in particular, don’t have state income taxes and instead rely on sales taxes paid by tourists.
“In fact, we have eight other states out there that don’t have income taxes, and they have 40 percent of the growth in the US. That’s what we want to do to bring some of that to the state of West Virginia, “said state Senator Craig Blair, (R) Berkeley Senate President.
Democrats note that these promises were made earlier, but the state’s population and business base continues to decline. They say without an income tax, West Virginia might instead be forced to levy tobacco taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes on real estate.
“I am for and the Democratic Party is for West Virgins to work. They are the building block of our society. They are what drives our economy and that is what we should put first. Western working class Virgins will not get a tax break, they will get a tax increase, ”Del said. Shawn Fluharty, (D) Ohio – Minority Whip.
In January, West Virginia collected US $ 200 million in income taxes. This is the state’s largest single source of income.
“Republicans now have a large majority in the Senate and House of Representatives. That’s enough votes to get out, but they still have to raise funds to replace lost income taxes, ”said Mark Curtis, 13th News Chief Political Reporter.
