Volunteers are wanted to assist most weak residents with tax preparation

LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks on Tuesday urged all eligible Michigandians to participate in the Voluntary Income Tax Aid (VITA) program ahead of the 2022 income tax season.

The program is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sponsored program that provides free tax assistance to people generally earning $ 57,000 or less, the disabled, the elderly, and English-speaking taxpayers who need help preparing their own tax returns offers.

“Volunteer recruitment is crucial every year, but this year’s needs are particularly urgent,” said a statement from the department. “While COVID-19 has reduced the number of volunteers in some community programs by nearly 70%, the number of residents who require free tax preparation services continues to rise.”

Eubanks highlighted the chance that volunteers can make a difference.

“Becoming a VITA Volunteer is an opportunity to make a difference in your community,” said Treasurer Rachael Eubanks. “Tax preparation can be stressful. If you help your neighbors through the VITA program, it is an effective help in a very meaningful and rewarding way. “

Voluntary Tax Preparation helps Americans claim Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC), federal tax breaks that help workers care for their families, weather unexpected economic changes, and reduce poverty.

The VITA programs alone save Michigandans approximately $ 19.5 million in tax preparation fees annually.

No prior knowledge of taxation is required to become a volunteer. VITA tax volunteers are assigned to a supporting organization. You will first receive training and then start volunteering in a suitable location.

The training is offered both online and in face-to-face classes. In general, control posts are open at night and on weekends, and working hours are flexible so volunteers can choose time slots that suit their schedules.

Individuals can enroll through the IRS.
