SEATTLE, February 9, 2021 / PRNewswire / – United Way of King County will now offer free virtual tax preparation services to low- and middle-income families with support from IRS-certified volunteers February 12th.
In-person tax preparation assistance is not available due to coronavirus pandemic social distancing guidelines.
Taxpayers can access this service by going to FreeTaxExperts.org or calling 211 for assistance.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, will provide services in 20 languages through the GetYourRefund.org online platform with the help of more than 300 volunteers.
The trained volunteers will help applicants apply for any credits they are eligible for, including the earned income tax credit, which is widely recognized as an effective tool in overcoming poverty.
According to the IRS, 20% of taxpayers don’t claim the EITC because they may not understand the eligibility requirements.
Walter Washington, Financial Stability Program Manager at United Way of King Countysaid COVID-19 has made the need for taxpayers to critically utilize these loans.
“The pandemic has put a financial strain on families. People are struggling to buy food and pay their rent,” Washington said. “There are many tax credits that lower-income people can qualify for and we want to make sure they claim these credits and get their refunds as soon as possible.”
During the 2020 tax return season, United Way switched from personal to purely virtual services due to the pandemic, helping 11,000 customers secure it $ 19 million in tax refunds. in the WashingtonIn total, more than 400,000 eligible families received $ 867 million in EITC – an average of $ 2,143 per file.
To help provide economic relief from the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington said the US Congress passed a new “lookback rule”. If a tax advisor earns less in 2020, he can either use the 2019 or 2020 income for his taxes – whichever brings you the most money back.
United Way’s tax preparation services are offered through April 18th.
