FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (WDVM) – The New Year is the start of a new tax season, and United Way of Frederick County is launching a free tax preparation program for households with limited income and working households (ALICE).
The Maryland Department of Health and the state Department of Education are issuing tentative COVID-19 guidelines
According to the United for ALICE organization, over 40 percent of US households earn below the ALICE threshold and many do not understand how to properly handle taxes or fill out paperwork due to language barriers or a lack of resources.
However, proper tax support can help ALICE households overcome poverty.
Eligible taxpayers can use this service at the Hillcrest Community Center. The service will be available from February 1st to April 15th, 2021.
“We are committed to helping our low and middle income neighbors receive 100% FREE tax preparation assistance so they can get their maximum refund and save more of their hard earned money. In 2019 alone, our VITA volunteers connected 600 local households with tax credits, saved them approximately $ 150,000 in tax preparation fees and returned $ 1.1 million in refunds to the community, ”said United Way of Frederick County.
