February 17, 2021 – Sacramento – The California Department of Employment Development (EDD) released new resources Tuesday to help people who received a Form 1099G complete their 2020 tax returns. The Form 1099G Information Center is available on the EDD website and contains shareable content about the Form 1099G process and actions Californians can take if they suspect identity theft in connection with unemployment benefits.
The EDD has issued a Form 1099G for people who have received taxable unemployment benefits in the past year. California unemployment benefits are exempt from state income tax but are required to be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under federal law. The EDD regularly provides a Form 1099G to anyone who received unemployment benefits in the previous year, including income from some types of state disability insurance and paid family vacation benefits. The 2020 Form 1099G also reflects the federal taxable additional support payments of $ 600 and $ 300.
“The EDD is committed to ensuring that the record number of Californians who have received unemployment benefits in the past year learn the annual Form 1099G process,” said Rita Saenz, director of the California Department of Employment Development. “Part of this effort is working with residents who may receive a 1099G Form that could be the victim of fraudulent activity or identity theft. This critical work is only part of EDD’s promise to tackle unemployment benefits fraud and find new ways to stay one step ahead of sophisticated criminal activity. “
The new Form 1099G Information Center provides an explanation of what to expect from a Form 1099G and how to request a copy if necessary. Other resources include answers to frequently asked questions, a video on how to access tax information via UI Online, and a printable one-page guide that can be used as a helpful handout.
Sources of information include a printable guide to unemployment benefits fraud, actions Californians can take if they suspect identity theft, how to file a fraud report, how to correct personal information to reduce tax liability, and how to obtain a Modified Form 1099G Requests to submit to the IRS. These resources can be used and shared by elected officials, consumer representatives, tax advisors, and others to help their constituents and customers understand and manage a 1099G Form.
Individuals suspected of being a victim of fraud are encouraged to notify the EDD through the department’s convenient Ask EDD website. The EDD also provides a hotline for those who disagree with the information on their Form 1099G or who believe they have been a victim of fraud.
