Tax Preparation

Socorro ISD college students proceed to assist residents with free tax preparation by April 15 – El Paso Herald Put up

Students in the Socorro Independent School District are partnering with GECU and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to provide tax preparation services in America, Eastlake, Socorro, Montwood, El Dorado and Pebble Hills High through April 15.

Students are enrolled in various courses for vocational and technical education. Instructors have earned either basic and / or advanced certification along with students in preparation to help community members file their taxes for free.

“These students are more than prepared,” said Dahlia Acosta, SISD’s career and technical education moderator. “Most of them are not just business majors, but must take and pass a test to become accountants.”

Taxpayers with annual income of $ 60,000 or less can report to one of the locations between 4:30 PM and 6:45 PM to submit their 1040 EZ, 1040A, and 1040 forms.

Taxpayers with disabilities, the elderly or limited English language skills above the maximum income can continue to receive support in their tax preparation.

“It feels really great to be able to prepare taxes for people,” said Lenea Granados, a senior and business student at Eastlake High School. “Not only do I benefit from it, but my family and the community too.”

The process was adjusted this year to take security measures and social distancing into account. Customers can drop off their documents through a drive through service at the high school.

The tax preparation program teacher / supervisor assigns the cases to a student who prepares the paperwork.

Customers then have the option to either sign electronically or return to campus to sign their tax return. Tax advisors ensure the confidentiality and security of documents throughout the process.

“The most important thing is that our students are safe,” said Claudia Rodriguez, an economics teacher at Eastlake High School. “We have great students who are still ready to come and do these services for our community.”

Individuals preparing their taxes should bring photo ID, original social security card for everyone on the income tax return, W-2 payslips for 2020, 1099-SSA, 1099-R and 1099-G, labor costs. 1095 Health Insurance, Direct Deposit Information, 1098 Student Loans, Proof of Childcare Expenses, and Property Tax Returns.

If the application is submitted together, both persons must be present.

In addition, when submitting documents, individuals need to know how much money they received on each stimulus test over the past year.

“It is heartwarming to see these students so dedicated to delivering these services to their community,” said Christopher Nwihim, business school coordinator at Pebble Hills High School. “They know that in these times we all have to stick together and help each other.”
