Tax Preparation

Simply-A-Begin gives native residents tax preparation providers

Just-A-Start, a Cambridge-based community development company, has set up free tax preparation services to help income-qualified taxpayers file their tax returns during the public health crisis.

The tax side is certified by the IRS as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and mainly supports filers with secure virtual appointments.

“Tax times can be difficult for applicants even in a more typical year, but the pandemic has left even more people in need of trustworthy, accessible tax assistance,” said managing director Carl Nagy-Koechlin. “Income losses, unemployment benefits, stimulus payments and gig economy work can be difficult to control from a tax perspective. It is important that people get the refunds they are entitled to without having to pay for expensive or unreliable prep services. “

Greater Boston residents with an income of $ 56,000 or less are invited to use free tax preparation services. Certified volunteers can help applicants gather the necessary information, prepare and file their tax return, and apply for their earned income tax credit to maximize their savings.

“Attendees can rely on the qualified volunteers in the tax jurisdiction for guidance to help them get the most out of their tax situation,” said Ian Davis, program coordinator for financial opportunities. “We help educate taxpayers about the benefits available to them such as American Opportunity Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. Even people overwhelmed by years of taxes or mistakes in previous returns can come to us and successfully find a solution. “

In 2020, Just-A-Start’s tax side supported more than 250 applicants, produced more than $ 550,000 in taxes paid, and helped attendees access over $ 352,000 in tax credit refunds for earned income.

Interested participants can start tax preparation at http://justastart.org/tax-site. The services are provided via virtual appointments and run until April 15th.
