Tax Preparation

RSVP provides in partnership with AARP starting February | a free earnings tax preparation to Kreis Oswego

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County’s Tax Aide program plans to begin preparing taxes for residents in the first week of February 2022, subject to local and New York state guidelines and restrictions.

Note that the process has changed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Taxpayers must make an appointment to have their taxes prepared. Appointments can be requested by leaving a voice message with your name and phone number at 315-216-7565. Someone calls back and makes an appointment.

From February 1st to April 13th the following locations are taking appointments:

• Fulton: Wednesdays 9am-3pm, Community Building, 141 S. First St.

• Oswego: Tuesdays 9 a.m.-3 p.m., McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake St.

The AARP-sponsored Tax-Aide program provides counseling, preparation, and electronic filing of taxes for all Oswego County residents, regardless of age or income, with a particular focus on individuals age 60 and older.

In coordination with the Internal Revenue Service, tax volunteers receive mandatory annual training and are required to be certified each tax season. The training covers the current federal and state tax laws, the peculiarities of personal tax returns and the provisions of the tax code that affect older people.

Taxpayers must complete a worksheet before their scheduled appointment. These worksheets can be picked up at the following locations: McCrobie Building in Oswego; the Fulton Community Room of the Parish Building; and the Hannibal, Oswego, and Phoenix libraries.

Taxpayers must bring all tax documents to their appointment, including photo identification, social security cards for each person filing taxes, most recent year’s tax returns, income statements (W-2s, 1099s, unemployment returns, interest statements, broker statements, etc.), receipts for all listed deductions (donations to charity, mortgage interest, property taxes, medical expenses) and bank account information for direct deposit of the refund.
