The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service announced that the due date for individual income tax returns for the 2020 tax year will be extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021 Credit Funds Available (EITC), to which only on filing can be accessed by taxes.
Local nonprofit Pisgah Legal Services is offering a Last Chance EITC Tax Preparation Clinic in the parking lot of its Asheville office at 62 Charlotte St. on Saturday, April 24th, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. IRS certified volunteers are available on-site to prepare taxes on a first-come-first-served basis free of charge. Taxfilers also have the option of having their documents scanned and processed outside the company so that they can be picked up and signed at a later point in time. An interpreter is available for Spanish speakers.
“This year it is more important than ever to file your taxes, even if you have not been required to do so in the past,” said Emily Ermer, VITA site coordinator of Pisgah Legal. “If you haven’t received your first two stimulus payments, filing your 2020 taxes is the only way to get those funds. Also, if you have children, you’ll need to file your 2020 taxes to receive benefits from the child tax credit recently enacted in the American Relief Plan. We have already helped people access thousands of dollars by filing their taxes. We hope that people living outside of Buncombe County will go out to find any tax preparation assistance they may need. “
Taxpayers must have a gross household income of $ 57,000 or less to qualify for free tax preparation assistance.
Please bring your tax documents, photo IDs and social security cards (no copies) with you for all taxable household members. If you are married and apply together, both spouses must come to the Last Chance EITC Tax Preparation Clinic. Other restrictions may apply and taxpayers will be screened for eligibility upon arrival.
Staff and volunteers will also be available to screen consumers for Affordable Care Act health insurance and schedule appointments for a COVID-19 vaccination. For more information, call (828) 210-3785.
