BROKEN ARROW – Northeastern State University Broken Arrow has partnered with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to provide free tax preparation services to the NSU locations and surrounding communities.
Tax preparation services began on February 4th and will run through May 15th. Anyone making less than $ 57,000 can qualify. Certified and trained volunteers are available by appointment to prepare basic tax returns for the federal and state levels.
Amber Whisenhunt, accounting instructor, said that following the decision by the Internal Revenue Service to extend the deadline for filing taxes to May 17, the opportunity was opened for more eligible residents to sign up for the service. She added that they are currently planning dates for April 17th and April 24th. Interested people can make an appointment by calling 918-486-2471.
“The VITA program is one of NSU’s most valuable non-profit services,” said Whisenhunt. “For many members of our community, their tax refunds are the largest amount of cash they receive each year and VITA enables them to avoid a large portion of their refunds being paid to commercial tax preparation services.”
