Tax Preparation

TAYLOR COUNTY – On Monday, a local company that wanted to help individuals with their accounting tasks celebrated a milestone anniversary.

The friendly folks at 4-W Financial Services, Inc. have worked to assist residents with tax matters and beyond for three decades, and they recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.

“December 27th was a momentous event for us,” said owner John Whitescarver. “We have been fortunate to serve the people of Taylor County and the surrounding area for 30 years, and we look forward to many, many more.”

Whitescarver shared that he started the business from home while working as a full-time teacher.

“I had worked outside of the office on a limited scale for two or three years, visiting customers in the evenings and by appointment only,” he said. “Then I decided to officially start the company a week before my father died. I continued to see individuals in the evenings and just built up my clientele over the years, and we are still strong here. “

Over the three decades of time, Whitescarver has undergone training and certification, making it a good choice for accounting needs.

“I’m what you call an enrolled agent, which means I can represent before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) anywhere in the country,” he noted. “I have held this certification since 1995, almost 26 years at that time.”

In order to become an Enrolled Agent, Whitescarver first had to pass more than 14 hours of tests and then be re-certified every year in order to continue to operate as such.

Whitescarver reported that he is a member of two separate professional associations, including the National Association of Enrolled Agents, which holds a license from the IRS, and the West Virginia Public Accountants Association, of which he has been a member for 25 years.

“I am also a graduate of the NAEA’s National Tax Practice Institute,” he said. “At one point, I was the only person in West Virginia who had done this. I’m not sure if other accountants did that. “

4-W Financial Services serves hundreds of clients and provides tax preparation and representation, as well as other various services.

“We are able to handle all types of tax returns,” said Whitescarver. “We are able to find our way around the tax laws.”

He said that while the laws govern how the company works, he strives to provide great service to everyone he helps.

“We have to work under tax law, but at the same time we try to help people as best we can,” said Whitescarver. “Tax laws are not always black and white, there are many gray areas and they can be interpreted in different ways. So I try my best to help my customers as best I can. “

4-W is certainly a family affair as Whitescarver handles all tax preparation matters while his wife Lee acts as office manager and his daughter does extra work.

“I think we’ve helped a lot of people over the years, or we hope we did, because that’s one of the reasons I love doing what I do,” said Whitescarver. “A lot of my customers have become really good friends.”

The company is always happy to welcome new customers and is happy to help you with your accounting tasks. 4-W can help with tax preparation and tax and estate planning, as well as limited payroll services.

“I usually work three shifts a day during tax season; morning, afternoon and evening and I’m often out seven days a week, ”explained Whitescarver. “In the off-season it is by appointment, but if someone comes here and needs to see me, there are very short waiting times.”

4-W Financial Services, Inc. is located on George Washington Highways in Pruntytown, across from the Taylor County Fair Grounds. They can be reached by phone at 304-265-1440.

“I am honored and proud to have served in Taylor County for 30 years and will continue to do so for as long as I can. I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported 4-W Financial Services over the years, “said Whitescarver. “Bookkeeping is a passion of mine and I’m ready to help if needed, so give us a call today!”
