IRS Proclaims Particulars on Free Tax Preparation | Messages

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) – The US Internal Revenue Service on Friday announced details of Free File options in 2022.

IRS Free File is available through IRS.gov and offers free online tax prep products for any individual or family who made $73,000 or less in 2021.

How it works – Tax software providers are making their online products available for free as part of a 20-year partnership with the IRS. This year there are eight products in English and two in Spanish.

Applicants can claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, Improved Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and other key credits, the IRS said in a Jan. 14 release. Taxpayers can use Free File to claim the remaining amount of their child tax credit and claim any prepayments on the child tax credit they did not receive in 2021.

Free File offers a direct deposit option, according to the IRS.

“IRS Free File offers taxpayers an easy and free way to do their taxes securely from home. Free File also offers electronic filing with direct deposit, which is the best way to avoid delays and get refunds quickly and securely,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement.

Filing season begins January 24, 2022, by which time free fillable forms and the electronic version of the IRS paper forms will be available. Until then, IRS Free File providers will accept completed tax returns and keep them until they can be filed electronically on that date, the IRS statement said.

Free file fill forms can be used by anyone, regardless of income, but should only be used by those familiar with preparing their own taxes.

In late January, the IRS will begin sending third economic impact payment notices to individuals who received a third stimulus payment in 2021, including initial and “plus” payments. The notices help determine if the taxpayer is eligible to claim the 2021 rebate credit for missing incentive payments.

IRS Free File can also be used by workers to apply for the EITC, which provides a refundable tax credit based on an applicant’s income and family size.
