Did you know the IRS offers free tax preparation help for qualified lower-income taxpayers and senior taxpayers? Their two programs, where IRS-trained volunteers help taxpayers prepare and file their tax returns, are Voluntary Income Tax Assistance and Elderly Tax Advice. You can qualify for VITA if you have earned an income of less than $ 57,000, have a disability, or have limited English speaking. You can qualify for TCE if you are 60 years or older. You can find the nearest VITA / TCE location in your area at irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep.
The AARP offers a similar service, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. Tax-Aide provides free virtual and personal tax assistance to all individuals with a focus on taxpayers over the age of 50 and those on low to middle incomes. You can find Tax Aide locations at taxaide.aarpfoundation.org.
Note that both the IRS and AARP programs are not designed for complicated returns.
