“Taxes are due on April 15th of this year. If a qualified taxpayer needs help filling out their tax return, free assistance is available, ”said David Harris, director of the Illinois Department of the Treasury. “While personal assistance is more limited due to the COVID pandemic, certified volunteers are still available to help people over the age of 50, and working class taxpayers file their state and federal tax returns accurately and on time, while ensuring the health and safety of Taxpayers and volunteers. “
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and tax advice for the elderly Programs provide free tax assistance to those earning $ 57,000 or less, those with disabilities, limited English speaking taxpayers, and those aged 60 and over. Taxpayers can search for a free tax advisor in their area on the Illinois Department of the Treasury website tax.illinois.gov.
Additional assistance is also offered through the IRS sponsored company Ladder Up Virtual tax support program, which also offers free tax return preparation for low-income and older taxpayers.
Paula Basta, director of the Department of Aging in Illinois, said she was encouraged by the innovative approaches to delivering services to protect vulnerable residents.
“I encourage everyone to educate those who need assistance filing their 2020 income taxes,” she said.
