Free tax preparation assist accessible throughout Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Elderly Illinois and low- to middle-income families can get free tax assistance through several trusted programs across the state of Lincoln.

It is a collaboration between the Illinois Department of the Treasury, the State Department of Aging, the IRS, and the AARP. The help offered depends on where you live.

David Harris, director of the Illinois Department of the Treasury, said personal assistance was limited due to the pandemic, but certified volunteers can continue to assist you with filing until April 15. Illinoisans can find a free tax advisor near them by visiting the state Treasury Department online.

The IRS offers its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs for those with incomes less than or equal to US $ 57,000, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers. The TCE program offers help to people aged 60 and over.

Additional tax assistance is available to Illinois residents through the IRS sponsored Ladder Up program.

The AARP Foundation’s tax-aide program offers free support to anyone over the age of 50 or to those with low to middle incomes. Your authorization is determined at the local level. they do not must be an AARP member to use the program.
