Free tax preparation accessible from January 31 | group

Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will again be available free of charge to low- to middle-income individuals of all ages in the Winona area. VITA, a national program of the IRS and Minnesota Department of Treasury, is sponsored locally by Catholic charities in southern Minnesota and a large group of dedicated volunteers who serve as greeters, appointment keepers, and tax preparers. The space was kindly provided by Winona Volunteer Services, the City of St. Charles and La Crescent Public Library.

VITA is available to individuals who meet the established income limits for adjusted gross income plus untaxed capital gains:

– Dependents (student working but dependent on parents) – $28,000

– Single (no dependents) – $38,000

– Family of two (married couple or single with one dependent) – $48,000

– Family of three or more people – $58,000

Preparers are unable to assist farmers, rental property owners, business owners who maintain inventory or have expenses greater than $5,000, members of the clergy, or taxpayers with more than six stock transactions.

Preparations and procedures are in place to provide maximum security for clients and volunteers due to COVID-19. Masks must be worn on the premises.
