Tax Preparation

Free in-person tax preparation out there regionally | Information, Sports activities, Jobs

ELKINS — The Tygart Valley United Way is currently offering free in-person tax preparations for households across the region.

The service is available to households making less than $58,000 per year. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. The service is also available outside the Tygart Valley region via satellite locations in Elkins, Parsons, Grafton and Philippi.

On the day of your appointment, a VITA volunteer will meet with you and prepare your return.

Your completed return will be available for pickup at an office in one to two business days after your appointment to allow for accuracy checks.

Those taking advantage of the service are asked to bring the following items to their appointment: Social Security card for you, your spouse and any dependents; photo ID of yourself and your spouse, if filing jointly; income and expense documentation (W-2, 1099, Social Security Benefit Statement, etc.) for the previous year; bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit (a voided check is acceptable); child tax credit letter; and stimulus letter.

If a couple is filing taxes jointly, both will need to attend the appointment as both will need to sign required forms.

In-person appointments are available from 9 am to 5 pm daily until April 18.

United Way tax preparers are certified to prepare a variety of tax returns, including Schedule Cs, itemized returns, and Schedule Ds. Due to IRS regulations for VITA sites, the United Way is unable to prepare tax returns with the following characteristics: rental property income or expenses; ministerial tax returns with parsonage/housing allowance; taxpayers with dual citizenship; and Schedule C with business use of home, net losses, expenses for employees or contract labor, and cost of goods sold (inventory).
