Tax Relief

DOR reminds householders of the deadline for neighborhood property tax relief

Homeowners have until March 15th to apply for property tax relief under the owner-occupier program.

Every South Dakotan who owned and lived in a house on November 1, 2020 is entitled to this classification and its property tax reduction. Taxpayers who previously received this tax credit and still own and live in the same house will continue to receive the property tax credit without applying.

The 2021 valuation notices, which will be sent to taxpayers starting March 1, 2021, will indicate whether the property classification is condominiums. Homeowners are advised to check their notices to ensure that their property is classified as a condominium.

Taxpayers who bought or built a home before November 1, 2020 can apply for this rating with their local compensation director. The form can be submitted electronically via the Department of Finance (DOR) website at

Applicants with questions about the owner-occupier scheme are encouraged to contact their local compensation director or call the DOR property tax department at 605-773-3311.
