Chilly Warfare veterans are actually eligible for a property tax break

The City of Newport announced today that Newport homeowners who served in the Cold War from 1947 to 1991 are now eligible for a Rhode Island Veteran’s Exemption property tax break.

This provision, adopted by the General Assembly earlier this year, also covers the widow / widower of a veteran who served during the Cold War.

Eligible property owners are requested to bring their DD214 to the Tax Assessor’s Office on Broadway 43 anytime between January 1 and March 15 to apply for the 2022-23 Tax Assessment.

Applicants must be based in Newport and not apply for an exemption in any other state.

Applications received after March 15, 2022 will not be considered for the upcoming tax cycle.

For additional questions, please visit the city’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/TaxAssessor or call (401) 845-5363.
